I'm glad you enjoyed this post, Ian, though sorry you also find the uritroittoirs cringe-worthy. Interestingly, since writing about them, I haven't come across any others and your comment made me wonder if they weren't discreetly removed by the Mairie. I did some research and it turns out that there are still some uritroittoirs here - but only 5, which is far fewer than what was expected at the time. So, fear not: If you come to Paris today, you're far more likely to have to deal with an automatic (closed, private) toilet than one of these!
